My last post on SFFdirect was on famous animals in science fiction and fantasy. Now I bring you a list of the best fantasy creatures in science fiction and fantasy. This list excludes species with human-equivalent (or greater) intelligence and consequently doesn’t contain races such as the Ents from Lord of the Rings. I see them as people rather than creatures; I’ll do a post on SFF intelligent races in the near future.
So, without further ado!
- The tribble. Yes top of the list is this small ball of fluff from the original Star Trek. Who can forget this cute and furry creature?
2. The huge Sandworms from the novel Dune. They inhabit the huge deserts of the planet Arrakis, a rather hostile environment.
3. The Alien from the Alien films. IMO Aliens is the best movie ever made, due in no small part to the terrifying xenomorph.
4. The Babelfish in The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy. Insert this little fish into your ear and henceforth you will hear everyone’s talk in your native language. So, it’s like a mini translation machine.
5. The dragons from Game of Thrones. Well they had to be on here didn’t they!
6. The wargs in Lord of the Rings. They are the mounts ridden by the orcs and look like a cross between a wolf and a bear.
7. Porgs in the Star Wars film, The Last Jedi. They’re so cute; love them or hate them they’re certainly a great original creation.
8. Moya, the living spaceship in the Farscape series. She is an organism that has evolved to be adapted to living in space. Additionally, the species bonds with a special pilot species in a symbiotic relationship.
9. Finally, Gizmo in Gremlins.
That concludes our look at science fiction and fantasy creatures. What other creatures do you think should be included on this list? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
